My Visit to Stanford University: Multilingual Digital Humanities in Focus

Writer's picture: LorellaLorella

I’m thrilled to share a little about my recent visit to Stanford University, where I had the privilege of being a guest scholar at the Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis (CESTA) during the Fall quarter of 2024. This was such a wonderful experience, filled with meaningful discussions, and a chance to connect with brilliant minds working at the intersection of technology, humanities, and society.

The conversations and collaborations at CESTA left me deeply energized and full of ideas for future projects

The visit revolved around my participation in CESTA’s “Global Approaches to Multilingual Digital Humanities and Data Practices” workshop series. This series creates space for scholars to discuss how digital and technological methodologies are shaping research across diverse languages, geographies, and disciplines. I was honored to kick off the series with a talk on Power, Language, and Access, The Role of Multilingualism in Digital Production, where I explored how multilingualism disrupts traditional approaches in the field and shared thoughts on the opportunities ahead. The talk was followed by a lively Q&A and engaging conversations that left me inspired and full of ideas for future research.

Beyond the talks, I had the chance to interact with Stanford faculty, students, and researchers who are doing groundbreaking work in digital humanities and beyond. The vibrant intellectual environment at CESTA, under the leadership of Professor Giovanna Ceserani, was a joy to experience firsthand. Their commitment to fostering critical and innovative research made my visit all the more impactful.

This trip was also a reminder of how much multilingual perspectives are needed in digital knowledge production, especially as we navigate increasingly global and interconnected research landscapes.

It was incredibly rewarding to contribute to these important dialogues and build bridges for future collaborations. I’m grateful to CESTA for their warm hospitality and for creating such a dynamic platform for exchange. Thank you to everyone who attended the talk and engaged with my work—you’ve truly inspired me to keep exploring new directions in multilingual digital humanities. Here's some pictures of this fantastic week and of the great connections I made during my visit.
